The vision of the Levy County Department of Public Safety is to develop, manage, and operate a comprehensive emergency response organization to serve the citizens and visitors of Levy County, Florida. The Department will embrace new technologies and techniques, focusing on training and education to provide the highest level of customer service and satisfaction in a professional and caring manner.
Our Mission
It is the mission of the Levy County Department of Public Safety to preserve life and property, promote public safety, and foster economic growth through leadership, management, and actions as an all risk life safety emergency response organization. This shall be accomplished through innovation, team work, and outstanding customer service with prudent utilization of public funds provided by the community.

Chief James “Mitch” Harrell – Our Public Safety Director
Chief Harrell has a history of career experience dating back over three (3) decades. He retired from Alachua County after holding the positions of Firefighter, Lieutenant, District Chief and finally, Assistant Chief. After a brief retirement, he began his position in Gilchrist County and served as Chief encompassing the responsibilities of Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management before finally joining our team at LCDPS.

Anthony Meyer, M.D. – Our Medical Director
Anthony Meyer, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UF Health and Medical Director of Levy County Department of Public Safety.
Before joining the faculty at the UF Health Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Meyer received his medical degree from Creighton University and went on to complete his emergency medicine residency at the University of Illinois. He subsequently completed additional subspecialty fellowship training in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at Carolinas Medical Center where he served as Assistant Medical Director of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Country EMS Agency, before ultimately being hired as faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida.
